Every time I try to write off Lucious, something happens that makes me question why he ended up the twisted man he is today. Now we have a definite answer... His mother.

    Michael Slezak TV Line
    May 05, 2016

Anika has so much up her sleeve and she is a very intricate character. Everybody's gonna have a really fun ride.

Brooke Pawling Stennett The Young Folks
    May 06, 2016

The evolving plot line of Lucious's mother remained an integral part of the show.

So many fleeting looks and people pushed against walls. More of this, please.

    Elizabeth Wagmeister Variety
    May 05, 2016

On the brighter side of the Lyon spectrum, Jamal met a new man in the music biz and entered into his first steamy hookup since breaking up with Michael.

    Isabella Biedenharn Entertainment Weekly
    May 05, 2016

For all the Lyon/lion metaphors this show conjures, this week brings a new one: Lucious's mother, Leah Walker, is absolutely not a lion. She's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

    Joshua Alston AV Club
    May 05, 2016

For a minute, for one giddy, glorious moment, I finally got it. I saw the Empire that the millions of people who tune into this show on a weekly basis have apparently been seeing when I couldn't.

    Tamara Best New York Times
    May 05, 2016

Interestingly enough, there are no childhood flashbacks in this episode. However, moments like when Leah forces Lucious to eat cake, (while wielding a knife a tad too close to him) serve as reminders to those darker times.

    Sean T. Collins Rolling Stone
    May 05, 2016

If you watched last night's Empire, you got more than an excellent hour of the series - and a rebound from last week's misfire.

    Ali Barthwell New York Magazine/Vulture
    May 05, 2016

The time has come for the question we didn't dare ask: Has Empire righted itself? After all the nonsense of the beginning of this season... is Empire steering itself back on course to being an actual good show.
