After service in The Royal Australian Air Force he began freelance writing and journalism specializing in film, theatre and comedy reviews. In May 1988 he was hired by The Age newspaper in Melbourne, Australia as a film critic, later doing general journalism and features. From 1987 he also worked as a radio broadcaster/film critic and radio producer in various Melbourne radio stations, principally 3AW while doing guest shots on ABC radio, 3CR and 3LO. In 1983 he co-wrote The Dole Bludgers' Handbook with John Clifford White and in 1985 wrote The Filmgoer's Guide To Australian Films. His long-time friendship with film director Geoffrey Wright landed him roles in three of Wright's films: Lover Boy, Romper Stomper and Metal Skin. Taking 10 years out of the media he worked at the University of Tasmania Medical School but is now back working as a film critic/reviewer on ABC Local Radio in Hobart, Tasmania in a regular weekly program segment with Michael Veitch. Although 'semi-retired' he is pre-producing and has written a script, with Bernie McDonald, for a feature film biopic on Australia's highest ranking World War 2 commander, Field Marshal Sir Thomas Blamey.
