Max was born on 24 November 1984 and lived in Leytonstone, East London, until going to university to read French and Italian. He claims to have got the acting bug when, at the age of twelve, he played Puck in a school production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and later became a member of the National Youth Theatre as well as training for a year at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. In 2009 he was nominated for the Ian Charleson award for best young actor for his roles in 'Measure for Measure' and 'Mrs Warren's Profession' and in 2011 got his first leading role in 'Luisa Miller' at the Donmar . He has since performed with the Royal Court and the National Theatre and in January 2014 was part of the Chichester Festival Theatre cast who transferred to Broadway with their production of 'King Lear', returning later in the year to star in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore' at the Globe in London.
