She made her Broadway debut in 1969 in "The Three Sisters" and won the Golden Palm Award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival for her role opposite Al Pacino in The Panic in Needle Park (1971). She also starred in "Hamlet" for New York's Shakespeare in the Park. She created the great role of "Sharon" in the Academy Award-winning motion picture The Exorcist (1973) and such an outright embarrassment in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977).
