    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

None of the three is much of an actress, and their weak performances can't give the show the weight or momentum it needs. Awkward dialogue and cliched plots are additional problems.

    Slate
    December 14, 2016

Demorest is convincing in the role, but she's not crowd-pleasing. She may be pre-ordained by the show to thrive, but she has the reckless and raw vibe of someone else, a survivor.

    Newark Star-Ledger
    December 14, 2016

While Empire hit that sweet spot of camp, trash and flash (at least for a while), Star is mostly trash -- which, of course, is not necessarily a deterrent to high ratings, but let's hope in this case it is. Queen Latifah at least deserves better.

A prime-time soap that wants to be harder-edged than Empire, but instead manages to be less fun.

    Detroit News
    December 13, 2016

Absurd? You bet. Entertaining? Not really, because Daniels lays it on so thick. Fox is waiting until the New Year for followup episodes. Maybe they figured the audience would need time to breathe. Or find the remote.

    The Young Folks

[The characters] are relatable, and it's easy to become enraptured with their ambition to succeed. It's a story of self-discovery.

    December 27, 2016

There's a LOT going on here, but if the grounded tone and soapy tendencies can finally gel, Star could eventually be a worthy Empire successor.

    Flavorwire
    December 18, 2016

In its eagerness to depict its young protagonist as an independent woman with agency, the show falls back on tired, gendered stereotypes.

    Vice
    December 15, 2016

The actresses can sing and dance, but their characters are so woefully underwritten that they mostly just stomp through the show.
