    Variety
    March 26, 2009

The skill of Hare's approach is that he initially allows us to assume, via normal cinema techniques, that what we saw of the dinner party was the whole story.

    Time Out
    January 26, 2006

Redgrave's performance is superb and she's ably supported by Holm, Dench, and Hamilton in particular.

    New York Times
    May 20, 2003

Mr. Hare has assembled a superb cast, and its ensemble work is very fine.

    Chicago Sun-Times
    January 01, 2000

A haunting film, because it dares to suggest that the death of the stranger is important to everyone it touches - because it forces them to decide how alive they really are.

    Chicago Reader

    [An] arch, overstyled downer ...

    TV Guide
    March 02, 2015

There are more questions asked than answered in this movie, but the mental gymnastics are well worth the effort.

    Filmcritic.com
    November 28, 2004

Wetherby has a pedigree which substantially outstrips its small and undercooked story.

    Spirituality and Practice
    August 18, 2004

A gripping psychodrama that touches on themes of loss, middle age blues, and the dangers of repressing primal emotions such as love, violence, and desire.
