The Adventures Of Prince Achmed (Les aventures du prince Ahmad) [Sub: Eng]
TrailerGerman director Lotte Reiniger spent three years making this silent animated film based on the Arabian Nights legends. The dashing Prince Achmed saves a lovely damsel from evil witches and mythical beasts, as well as discovering Aladdin's lamp, all in the primitive but intriguing silhouette style of animation which Reiniger herself developed. The film's 65-minute running time gave it the distinction of being the first animated feature in the world, but only one copy remained in existence until Reiniger supervised the striking of newly tinted negatives in the early '70s.0 CommentsSort By- Newest

Critic Reviews of "The Adventures Of Prince Achmed (Les aventures du prince Ahmad) [Sub: Eng]"
New York TimesAugust 19, 2014It may not be exactly new to perceive silhouette figures on the screen, but it is quite another matter as they are offered here.
Time OutJune 24, 2006It impresses for its exquisite craftmanship, balletic movement, expressive romanticism and moments of potent sensuousness and poetry.
San Francisco ChronicleOctober 30, 2001The images, most of them gorgeously detailed silhouettes, are dazzling.
Empire MagazineAugust 19, 2014Beautiful and innovative -- age only adds to its brilliance and charm.
TV GuideAugust 19, 2014German filmmaker Lotte Reiniger's ground-breaking, silent, animated fantasy feature used cut-out paper silhouettes to tell a tale that combines pieces of several stories from The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights.
Film4August 19, 2014Beautiful as it all is, considerable dedication is required to sit through an hour of monotone, flat silhouette animation. It's rewarding -- but the reward is hard earned.
Electric SheepAugust 19, 2014Even with the knowledge that the figures are made from simple pieces of cards and tricks of light, there is a magical splendour to her animations.
Antagony & EcstasyJune 29, 2008More than eighty years later...it still looks like nothing you've ever seen.
Combustible CelluloidMay 26, 2006The Adventures of Prince Achmed deserves to be a landmark. And it would be if it were better known.
Film ThreatDecember 06, 2005That The Adventures of Prince Achmed still survives is a work of wonder equivalent to any rare treasure which Aladdin could rub out of his lamp.
