Pic is neither funny enough nor scary enough to be fully satisfying as either a shocker or a spoof.

    Stephen Holden New York Times
    May 20, 2003

Between scenes of splattering gore in which severed heads literally roll across the floor, the movie has a good time spoofing itself and a gallery of mostly sleazy characters who confront a crew of blood-thirsty demons.

    David Kronke Los Angeles Times
    February 21, 2001

Next time out, let's hope it involves a story that can stand on its own, without having to be propped up by the Crypt Keeper's silly patter.

    Edward Guthmann San Francisco Chronicle
    January 01, 2000

The movie isn't particularly well-paced, and I found it dull.

    Richard Harrington Washington Post
    January 01, 2000

There's still a lot of filler in this chiller.

Basically Romero Lite, but a strong cast and capable direction by Ernest Dickerson provide it with some lift.

If it weren't for a gleefully game cast - led by Billy Zane's over-the-top bonkers demon lord - it would be a hard movie to recommend.

It may not be a classic or even as successful as the genuinely unsettling 1972 E.C. Comics adaptation, but now, just as in 1995, it fulfills its goal as a sardonic, blessedly unpretentious creature feature.

    Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed

As for fans of Zane, if there was ever a film where the man breaks loose with his charm and enthusiasm, "Demon Knight" is his podium.
