    [Covers] too many bases.

    Chicago Sun-Times
    January 01, 2000

Is this a good movie? Not exactly; too much of it is on automatic pilot, as it must be, to satisfy the fans of the original Shaft.

    Salon.com
    January 01, 2000

Its sheer balls-out bravado is often brutally funny.

The potency of [Jackson's] performance is almost enough to save this Y2K update of the black private dick from erectile dysfunction, but not quite.

    Orlando Sentinel
    January 01, 2000

John Singleton may have been the youngest director ever to be nominated for an Academy Award, but I wouldn't exactly call him a natural-born filmmaker.

    Seattle Times
    January 01, 2000

Whenever he [Jackson] isn't on the screen -- which isn't much -- the movie flags.

doesn't have the same historical impact as the original .... but entertaining

    Cinema Crazed

Packs a ton of style and solid laughs, but in the end, it's mostly a hollow experience...

A guilty pleasure for adults and older teens.

    Combustible Celluloid

Shaft quickly splits into two different movies, and only one of them fully succeeds.

    Looking Closer
    December 06, 2004

The primary focus of the film, and the real reason we're here, is to watch Samuel Jackson sink his teeth into the Shaft's trash-talking dialogue.

    Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY)
    June 28, 2004

Samuel L. Jackson, who broke out of the pack in Pulp Fiction, fits the role and his leather Armani coat as though it's tailor-made. He's the man, and we can dig it.
