Critic Reviews of "Gifted"
J. R. Jones Chicago ReaderApril 13, 2017As scripted, Evelyn is too vicious to be persuasive, and Flynn undercuts her morally by stressing her lust for recognition.
Colin Covert Minneapolis Star TribuneApril 13, 2017Sure, it's a simple, straightforward film, but sometimes that's all you need as long as its heart is true.
Rex Reed New York ObserverApril 12, 2017A formulaic and manipulative tearjerker that is really nothing more than a woman's picture from a man's point of view.
Calvin Wilson St. Louis Post-DispatchApril 11, 2017"Gifted" is an engaging comedy-drama that avoids becoming too much of a tearjerker.
David Fear Rolling StoneApril 10, 2017The film's heroine is extraordinarily gifted. The film itself, not so much.
Ellie Walker-Arnott Time OutApril 07, 2017The question at the movie's heart is: What is best for Mary? The answer Gifted chooses is predictable, but that doesn't stop the movie from messing with your tear ducts.
James Mottram South China Morning PostMay 01, 2017It's predictable but pleasurable enough - an inoffensive charmer that doesn't outstay its welcome.
Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue.comApril 28, 2017... a heartfelt but manipulative tearjerker that never digs into the various moral dilemmas at its core with much sincerity or authenticity.
Jackie K. Cooper Huffington PostApril 24, 2017A strong plot mixed with dynamic acting added to innovative directing equals a gift of a movie. Mckenna Grace is adorable.
John Serba MLive.comApril 21, 2017Functions reasonably well as an ankle-deep melodrama until its third act, when characters are thrown into the gears of the plot machine.
Dan Lybarger Arkansas Democrat-GazetteApril 21, 2017Essentially a watered-down version of Searching for Bobby Fischer, Gifted is earnest but phony.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality and PracticeApril 21, 2017Drama about an uncle's love and caretaking for his niece who is a young math prodigy.
