Enemy Within

This movie has some things right but a lot of things really wrong as well. Never expect historical accuracy in a movie, right? Thing is, the Harada's did a LOT of really bad things to their country but also their friends. They betrayed their friends as well as the US, This movie makes them far more sympathetic than they deserve. In order to help someone they knew to be a foreign enemy, they helped terrorize an island full of their innocent friends. Burning homes, stealing, attempted murder, kidnapping, beatings, you name it. People lament and criticize the internment of the Japanese in the US during WWII. And rightly so. But you can lay most of the blame for the internment of the Japanese solely on the Haradas actions. As the US Navy reported after the incident. Due to how instantly the Haradas turned murderous traitors, they said, in part, "likelihood that Japanese residents previously believed loyal to the United States may aid Japan." The Haradas proved that statement beyond all doubt. Add to that, the US caught dozens of active Japanese spies. So, the only solution they saw was interment. And I would point out, given the climate in the US, it was also to protect Japanese Americans from outraged citizenry. Japanese Americans in Hawaii were not interned. But on the mainland, very real, and justified, hatred towards Japanese was a real concern. Anyway, decent enough movie but not the whole story.
