Critic Reviews of "Boy Erased"
Detroit NewsNovember 09, 2018"Boy Erased" has its heart in the right place in exposing these supposed treatment centers. But where it should light a fire, it barely musters any smoke.
San Diego ReaderNovember 09, 2018If you know someone who is thinking of putting their kid though one of these programs, buy them a ticket. If not, what's the point?
Chicago Sun-TimesNovember 09, 2018To its great credit, "Boy Erased" never reduces Jared's parents to monolithic, backwards-thinking caricatures.
New York Magazine/VultureNovember 09, 2018Edgerton proves an incisive filmmaker. Every beat has weight. Every close-up registers. He values silence - he trusts you to feel things along with his characters.
ReelViewsNovember 08, 2018Although Boy Erased depicts a series of injustices, its ultimate message is one of the hope and optimism that can accompany acceptance.
Toronto StarNovember 08, 2018The film boasts a range of great performances by fine actors, including the up-and-coming and soon to be ubiquitous Lucas Hedges. It also offers a screenplay penned by Edgerton that treats the subject and its opposing views with care and consideration.
Sacramento News & ReviewDecember 06, 2018Only another impressive turn from Lucas Hedges elevates this earnest but slipshod drama above the level of an after-school special.
Blu-ray.comDecember 05, 2018"Cameron Post" attacked the same cycle of punishment and profundity without resorting to cliché, also unearthing a more organic understanding of human need and the power of fear. It's the better film.
Jaredmobarak.comDecember 05, 2018Edgerton fleshed out the contradictions and challenges [the Eamons] face very well with the help of nuanced performances. [Not so much the other characters.]
Laramie Movie ScopeDecember 05, 2018The scenes of Jared coping with his feelings are hard to watch, including a homosexual rape scene, and Jared's uncomfortable relationships with his parents and friends. While there is a peaceful resolution to Jared's dilemma, there is also tragedy.
Urban CinefileDecember 04, 2018The taboos between faith and homosexuality are canvassed in this sensitively directed and shocking expose about conversion therapy.
Aisle SeatNovember 30, 2018An emotional, skillfully-made film about the need to love and accept people just as they are.
