    Being AP

In the sport of horse racing, jump jockey Anthony “AP” McCoy seldom knew the bitter taste of defeat. Over the course of an illustrious career spanning two decades, the 41-year-old Irishman would become the first rider to record 4,000 career wins, riding on the backs of more than 4,300 winners. The documentary follows 40-year-old AP McCoy during his 20th and final year atop the horse-racing world.

"Being AP" feels like the work of an official biographer who went a little bit rogue.

AP McCoy is regarded as the greatest jump jockey who's ever sat in a saddle, and this fascinating documentary follows his last year on the track.

I don't know anything about horse racing... I did, nonetheless, enjoy every minute of Being AP, mostly because of the dry, dour wit of the film's subject and the good-natured eye-rolls provided by his wife, Chanelle.

Wonke has the access to make a great documentary, but can't quite find the perfect story focus to put this among the best sporting films.

As a portrait of what motivates a sportsman at the top of his game, and how difficult it is to let go, this is insightful stuff.

It's cinematic, almost lyrical; steam rising off the horses on their early-morning workouts at the Irish-run stables. The elusive, gruff trainers and owners, the professional, unsentimentalised communication between man and beast.
