As satisfying viewing experiences go, the film comes up mighty short in terms of story, interesting characters and technical prowess, not to mention a 65-minute running time.

Ultimately each move toward breaking a barrier or assaulting a taboo is undercut by a reliance on conformity and convention.

One cannot entirely condemn Winterbottom, because the film is not without its meritorious moments, yet at the same time, 9 Songs doesn't effectively traverse the line of glorified pornography, so much as it narrowly scrapes past it.

It has the rough, penciled-in feel of a sketch, flurries of palpable physicality left along the path of a dissolving relationship

"9 Songs" is high-art pornography that doesn't neglect its compulsory gooey payoff scene.
