Ned Williams started off life as an actor, appearing in BBC dramas such as Charlie and the Pickwick Papers, before studying English at Hertford College, Oxford. He then moved into the field of documentary and drama-documentary making. He has worked on a number of programmes specialising in art and architecture, Grand Designs for Channel 4 and the RIBA Stirling prize amongst others. Over the years he has worked closely with the poet Simon Armitage, and produced and directed a number of films with him - one about VE Day with Sheila Hancock which combined elements of drama, drama-documentary and poetry, and another heart-rending film about 9/11 featuring Rufus Sewell, which won a Royal Television Society award.
