On August 14, 1984, Alex Mathias Retamal Soto was born to Alex Retamal, a construction worker, and Mirtha Soto, who worked in manufacturing. In 1989, his family emigrated from Santiago, Chile to Montreal, Canada for a better future, a fresh start. He grew up in a multi-lingual household, speaking Spanish and French. From a very young age, his family launched him into the world of film. His father, who always wanted to become an actor himself, passed on his passion to Mathias, buying him a movie every week at ten years old. He grew up watching classics such as Scarface, Blood In, Blood Out, Casino, and Carlito's Way. It was these movies that inspired and shaped him as an actor today, but it was just a matter of time before his life took a dark turn of events, mirroring those in his favorite films. In 2008, Mathias was determined to change his life. He studied Media Technology for Film and Television Production Sets at Collège O'Sullivan de Montréal and worked as a freelance behind the camera. He was never happy about his job, but his passion for film was burning within. One day, just like out of fiction, a stranger happened to pass by and suggested him to try acting. An epiphany struck. Could he possibly follow the path of his idol, the great Antonio Banderas? Could he possibly be Robert Rodriguez's next star? He did not think twice. Right then and there, he decided to get out from behind the camera to flourish in front of it.The year 2011 marked his move to Vancouver, B.C.. Armed with two-thousand dollars and an ambitious goal, he attended then graduated from Vancouver Acting School in 2012. Following his father's footsteps, he worked as a construction worker to make ends meet. After a year full of toil and rejections, Mathias' visions finally became reality. In 2013, he made his first television appearance in CW's The Tomorrow People. From that moment on, this Chilean-French-Canadian has been on a roll, booking one gig after another. Show less «
