She has previously held teaching posts at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and the University of Birmingham. In her research, she specialises in the literature and social history of Rome in the first century AD, and in classical reception, or what happens when the modern world gets hold of the ancient past and the uses to which it puts it. Her book on the ethics of the family in the philosophy of Seneca was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017; her book "Tracking Classical Monsters in Popular Culture" was published by Bloomsbury in 2019.
