Born in the rural Georgia town of Murrayville. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a government employee. Kelley moved to London at the age of 19 to pursue his acting career. There he attended Lee Strasberg under Marianna Hill and Michael Billington. He then moved to New York City where he was trained under Catherine Gaffigan. He eventually moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he landed his first acting job in Stephen King's The Night Flier (1997). He soon pursued his endeavors behind the scenes in production.
