Like his father and brothers (designer Edward Stevenson and actor Onslow Stevens), trained at the Pasadena Community Playhouse, where he appeared in plays and learn stagecraft. He had a number of small film roles, then drifted into film editing. He spent several years as post-production supervisor at Bing Crosby Productions.
