Deborah was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1961. She is the second youngest of five children. Deborah was drawn to the theatre when she was a child; her first lead role was at age 15 as Bilbo Baggins in a summer children's theatre production of The Hobbit. She studied theatre part-time while in high school before moving to Toronto, Ontario to attend theatre school. She trained as a classical actor in Toronto at the theatre arts program (that also included musical theatre training) at George Brown College, and later attended the University of Toronto to study English literature. Over the past 40 years Deborah has performed in numerous stage productions, and began working in film in 2014. Among her favorite roles on the stage are Mrs. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Feste in Twelfth Night, and Rabbi Sharon in The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.
